Lesson 1 — What Is Counselling?
Counselling is a professional, confidential conversation that helps a person explore feelings, thoughts and choices, and make changes they choose for themselves. It is not advice-giving, diagnosing friends, or telling someone what to do. A counsellor listens without judgment, stays within agreed boundaries, and works at the client’s pace. If someone is at immediate risk, counselling does not replace emergency services — seek urgent local help.
Reading: reflect on a time when being truly listened to helped you. Note what the listener did — and did not do.
Lesson 2 — Core Listening Skills
Good listening is active: give full attention, notice body language and tone, and check understanding. Paraphrase in your own words, reflect the feeling behind the words, and use open questions such as “What felt hardest about that?” Avoid interrupting, minimising, or jumping to solutions.
Practice: in a 10-minute conversation, use only listening responses — paraphrase, reflection and open questions — then write what changed in the conversation.
Lesson 3 — Boundaries, Ethics and Safety
Agree the purpose, time, place and limits of confidentiality at the start. Keep clear personal boundaries, do not work beyond your competence, and know your safeguarding route if someone discloses harm, abuse or risk. Record only what is necessary, store notes securely, and seek supervision or guidance when unsure.
Quiz — Answers Included for Self-Checking
- Which response best shows empathy? Answer: reflecting the person’s feeling and meaning, without judgment — for example, “It sounds like you felt overlooked, even though you worked hard.”
- What is an open question? Answer: a question that cannot be answered yes/no and invites the person to explore, such as “What would help most right now?”
- When must confidentiality be broken? Answer: when there is a serious risk of harm, abuse, or a legal duty to disclose — explained to the client at the start.
- Which is NOT counselling? Answer: giving direct advice or telling the client what decision to make.
- What is congruence? Answer: the counsellor being genuine and honest, while remaining professional and appropriate.
