Diploma in Counselling — by Institute of Professional Counseling and Psychotherapy. Price: £679. Online, self-paced study, open to learners in the UK, Canada, USA and Australia. Enrol from the course page; complete the lessons and quiz, and receive a diploma certificate on successful completion.
LESSON 1 — THE COUNSELLING RELATIONSHIP: A trustworthy relationship is the foundation of change. Learn to offer empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard, while noticing your own reactions and keeping the client’s needs at the centre of the work.
LESSON 2 — CORE SKILLS IN DEPTH: Practise attending, active listening, reflection, paraphrasing, summarising, open questions and silence. Learn when to challenge gently, how to pace a session, and how to check that the client feels understood.
LESSON 3 — THEORY INTO PRACTICE: Compare person-centred, psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioural ideas, and learn to use theory without forcing clients into a model. Build a personal, coherent way of working that you can explain and justify.
LESSON 4 — ASSESSMENT, FORMULATION AND PLANNING: Assess presenting issues, strengths, support networks and risk. Agree clear goals, a working contract and a review process, and recognise when referral or specialist help is needed.
LESSON 5 — WORKING WITH DIFFICULT MATERIAL: Respond to grief, anxiety, low mood, anger, shame and relationship conflict with steadiness and care. Learn grounding, containment and safe ways to explore painful experience at the client’s pace.
LESSON 6 — ETHICS, SUPERVISION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Apply confidentiality, boundaries, consent, record-keeping and safeguarding in everyday practice. Use supervision and reflective practice to grow, and plan endings that respect the work done.
READING AND RESOURCES: McLeod, An Introduction to Counselling; Rogers, On Becoming a Person; Egan, The Skilled Helper; Yalom, The Gift of Therapy; BACP Ethical Framework summaries; local safeguarding guidance for the UK, Canada, USA and Australia.
