LESSON 1 — Why Ethics Matter
Ethics protect clients, practitioners and public trust. Learn the principles of autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice and fidelity, and how they guide decisions when rules alone do not give a clear answer.
LESSON 2 — Confidentiality, Consent and Records
Consent must be informed, ongoing and freely given. Records should be accurate, secure, proportionate and kept only as long as needed. Learn what to tell clients at the start about limits to confidentiality, including safeguarding and legal duties.
LESSON 3 — Boundaries and Dual Relationships
Boundaries include time, place, money, gifts, social contact and self-disclosure. Dual relationships create conflicts of interest and power imbalance. Practise kind, clear boundary-setting and know when to refer on.
LESSON 4 — Power, Culture and Anti-Discriminatory Practice
Power differences affect safety and voice. Reflect on culture, language, disability, gender, sexuality and faith without stereotyping. Adapt practice respectfully and challenge your own assumptions.
LESSON 5 — Reflective Practice Models
Use Gibbs’ cycle and Schön’s reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action. Keep supervision notes, separate fact from interpretation, and turn difficult moments into learning rather than blame.
LESSON 6 — Ethical Dilemmas in Practice
Work through anonymised dilemmas: a client asks you to keep a secret that involves risk; a former client seeks friendship; a colleague’s practice concerns you. Apply principles, consult supervision, document your reasoning, and act proportionately.
READING AND RESOURCES
Read: BACP Ethical Framework; Bond, Standards and Ethics for Counselling in Action; Johns, Becoming a Reflective Practitioner. Check the ethical code and safeguarding law that apply in your own country (UK, Canada, USA or Australia).
